History
New Romney is one of the group of towns known as The Cinque Ports, mentioned in the Royal Charter of 1155. The Cinque Ports are the "ports" of:
Hastings, New Romney,Hythe,Dover,and Sandwich in Kent.
In 1287 AD a severe storm hit the English Channel, and the harbour at New Romney was devastated.
St Nicholas Church was the first church built in New Romney, and construction was started in 1080 by Bishop Odo, half brother to William the Conqueror. Today, St Nicholas is one of many churches supported by the Romney Marsh Historic Churches Trust. The Romney,Hythe and Dymchurch Light Railway opened in 1927, and is the smallest public railway in the world.The line runs from nearly 14 miles from Hythe through Dymchurch, St Mary's Bay, Dymchurch, New Romney and down to Dungeness.Find out more about the light railway here(Link opens in new window).
